Biblical Authority of Direct Command, Approved Example, and Necessary Inference:

Proof Text: Luke 10:25-37

Luke 10 25:37, “And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? 37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.”

Outline of Argument

I. What did Jesus do and teach to inherit eternal life?

A. He gives an answer to a question

1. Jesus knows this is to trip Him up in doctrine but loves the man anyways

a. He knows this guy wants to see Him fail and prove Himself false

b. He knows he is a lawyer and does not want to change but for things to stay the same

c. Jesus realizes there is hope and so loves this lawyer trying to destroy his influence

2. He is asked, not out of sincerity but the man wanted to justify himself

a. The man gives and receives all the right answers but then carries the conversation to a different level by justifying himself with this question who is my neighbor

b. He takes care of those he knows or that take care of him (as all men do)

c. Jesus tells a story to illustrate it is not about teaching the law but doing the law that matters if you seriously want to inherit eternal life you will have to love your neighbor as yourself.

3. Jesus loves the man as himself and teaches him a higher truth

a. He gave an example of loving your neighbor and asks a question to check understanding.

b. Justifying himself, he learned to help the needy,

c. Jesus tells a lawyer to practice the law and not teach the law. His neighbor may be the vilest thing but if he has need then love him.

B. He gives an example to lay alongside the higher truth

1. He tells a story of a man beaten and robbed of every thing except the life he clings to

a. He gave an example of a man (real or unreal), perhaps this had happened earlier that day, but this man had been beaten robbed of everything but his life that he was clinging on to.

b. These thieves don’t check pedigree, or status other than if you have money. They have seriously injured a man and overtook him and his possessions.

c. Illustration.

2. He tells of a priest, Levite, and a Samaritan half breed meet the injured man

a. The Priest, in that day your connection to God, walks by an ignores the robbed man.

b. The Levite, the modern minister deacon, etc. take care of the church duty keeper, walks by and ignores the situation.

c. A half breed less than human, walks by and helps supply everything he needs.

3. The less than human, loves the man and saves him from further destruction

a. Picks him up- he has personal contact with a sinful man God did not protect

b. Pours in Oil – he bandaged this guy up best he could an takes him to a place of comfort.

c. Anything more – he says help to the inn keeper, he may need a few more days, if he stays any longer or needs anything else I will repay. He bore another’s burden.

C. He gives a direct command to obey an approved example

1. He gives a direct command to go and do likewise.

a. He had to love his neighbor as himself to inherit eternal life to the level of the example of helping a half human back to health.

b. He used a “sinner” example of the Samaritan, to teach a lawyer how to love the “undesirables”.

c. This lawyer must help sinners in need if he wants to inherit eternal life, not teach law.

2. The example of Jesus proves the direct command, necessary inference, and approved example doctrine as true here in this parable and example of Jesus.

a. Jesus commanded to obey an approved example (Approved Example)

b. Jesus gave a direct command expecting obedience (Direct Command)

c. Jesus inferred he would have to supply another needs from what he has (Necessary Inference)

3. What did Jesus make binding on this insincere man, in order to answer his original question What must I do to inherit eternal life?

A direct command

An approved example

A Necessary inference

Father, we pray you would confirm this truth to us and remove anything that hinders us from obeying the Author of salvation Jesus of Nazareth, your son may it be so.

In Ephesians 1, Which is another context for approved example, for we are told it is written, to the Saints in Ephesus and to all those faithful. To us today: we are faithful and this the instruction to Ephesians Christian applies also to all those faithful today also.

Listen: Eph 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:

In essence we are instructed by scripture to follow the instructions given to Saints (Gal 3:27) in Ephesus, we are told to follow the same rules, and thus follow their example. Hence approved example principle to follow the faithful instructions given to the faithful Christians.

Jesus of Nazareth said this sermon,

Mat 25:14-46 For it is as when a man, going into another country, called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. (15) And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his several abilities; and he went on his journey. (16) Straightway he that received the five talents went and traded with them, and made other five talents. (17) In like manner he also that received the two gained other two. (18) But he that received the one went away and dug in the earth, and hid his lord's money. (19) Now after a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and makes a reckoning with them. (20) And he that received the five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou delivered unto me five talents: lo, I have gained other five talents. (21) His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. (22) And he also that received the two talents came and said, Lord, thou delivered unto me two talents: lo, I have gained other two talents. (23) His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. (24) And he also that had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew you that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou did not sow, and gathering where thou did not scatter; (25) and I was afraid, and went away and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, you have your own. (26) But his lord answered and said unto him, thou wicked and slothful servant, you knew that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter; (27) you ought therefore to have put my money to the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back mine own with interest. (28) Take you away therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him that hath the ten talents. (29) For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that has not, even that which he hats shall be taken away. (30) And cast ye out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. (31) But when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit on the throne of his glory: (32) and before him shall be gathered all the nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; (33) and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. (34) Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: (35) for I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; (36) naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came unto me. (37) Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed thee? or athirst, and gave thee drink? (38) And when saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? (39) And when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? (40) And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye did it unto one of these my brethren, even these least, you did it unto me. (41) Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels: (42) for I was hungry, and you did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; (43) I was a stranger, and you took me not in; naked, and you clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and you visited me not. (44) Then shall they also answer, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister (serve) unto you? (45) Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as you did it not unto one of these least, you did it not unto me. (46) And these shall go away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life.

This was one discourse, a sermon, given by the Author of Salvation (Heb 5:8-9) Himself. What is the sermon about? How we are given our talents, how we are rewarded if faithful with our talents, what those talents are and who used them faithfully?

How we are given our talents…

A man going on a journey gives His servants His goods

He gives according to his discernment of their abilities…

One man 5 talents (talents is a weight a measurement, weighing about 3000 shekels, or about 114 lbs., does not say, but gold would have been the highest standard) 5 x 114 = 570lbs of gold

One man 2 talents (114lbs x 2 = 228 lbs. of gold)

One man 1 talent, 114 lbs. of gold.

If a very rich man gives his servants a large sum of money, when he goes on a journey, what would he expect? Them to take care of his money and serve him. Some went to work making more money or being faithful to their giver. One, does nothing with His Lord’s money, the others go to work and are successful in business.

The owner comes and checks on his business (his servants). Two have been prosperous, industrious and have a gain. He rewards their faithfulness with more abundance.

Then the owner comes to the one that hid his Lord’s money and gave it back just as it was given him. The Lord was mad, he cast him away into outer darkness because he did nothing for gain. He was lazy, slothful, and accomplished nothing, as in useless. The Master, or owner, then strips the talent from the man that did nothing and gave it to the one who was most faithful.

Jesus teaches us here: whomever has faithfulness, more abundance will be given. Whoever does not have faithfulness, even the gift God gave him will be taken away if he does not use it correctly. In this case, putting money in a bank, to gain interest was the minimum requirement of faithfulness, but this man could not even do a simple task; with a large sum of money. So, then it is as it is written, God is a Rewarder of those that diligently seek Him, Heb 11:6. And also God corrects his children, Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives.

He then gives the ultimate visitation: the Judgement Scene. Then uses as an illustration of what God expects faithfulness to look like with our (money or talents of gold in this teaching)…

Those rewarded for faithfulness, with more in Heaven: fed Him, Clothed Him, Gave Him drink, Visited Him in prison and when He sick… these were the ones that God considered faithful with large sums of money.

Use the gold of this world to buy you gold in Heaven.

Those who did not use their money by treating their neighbors as themselves, by serving those in need, were rejected and cast out. Those that had given of their money through faithful obedience were rewarded with eternal treasure in Heaven.

You cannot out give God: it is written, Pro 19:17 He that hath pity upon the poor lends unto Jehovah, and his good deed will he pay him again., John the Baptist message of fruits of repentance, was whoever has two coats give to one that has none. How many of us still need to learn and practice treating our neighbors as ourself. What if you were without a coat, would you want to be warm? What if you were without food, would you want to be fed? What if you were dehydrated? Would you want a drink of water? What if you were sick? Would you want someone to pray for and visit you? What if you were in prison? Would you want someone to visit you and, in those days, if someone did not bring you food in prison you starved.

It is good news that whoever follows Jesus will not hunger and will not thirst, listen to Jesus words: John 6:35 Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. It is so good news to know, if we continue in truth and spirit, then we will be faithful. When we are faithful, we seek God and are rewarded by remaining true to His word. How many of us can spare a shirt? However, it is much more important it is to share the good news of Jesus. Jesus died so they will never have to choose to do a wrong or immoral thing, and if you will just walk in spirit and truth remaining faithful to Him, He will provide food, water, enough for your soul’s deepest needs. He is the Great Physician, that will write you the prescription, remedy, and administer the cure for all that ails or have been afflicted with, if you come to Him. None of Christ’s faithful few, are begging bread, if we could share Christ then we could have them feed on Jesus, the Living Bread who gives the Living Water, eternally. Our Father will adopt anyone who will love and practice the truth of His Son who died on the cross and was raised the third day. It is written, 2Co 6:17-18 Wherefore Come you out from among them, and be you separate, saith the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; And I will receive you, (18) And will be to you a Father, and you shall be to me sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Jesus of Nazareth said, Mat 11:28-30 Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Do you want rest for your soul? Yes of No?

Do you want a light and easy burden of walking with Jesus and learning His truth? Yes or No?

Will you agree to follow Jesus and learn about him, so you can find rest for your soul and a light and easy yoke? Yes or No?

Jesus of Nazareth said, He that believes and is baptized will be saved, but he that does not believe will be damned. Mark 16:16 If you do not believe Jesus died to free you, from having to choose a wrong thing, Jesus says, then there is no hope for you or you will be damned, but Jesus also says, whoever hungers and thirsts after righteousness will be filled Mat 5:6.

Do you want to be saved by Jesus by being baptized into Christ? Yes or No?

Do you want to go to Heaven? Yes or No?

If you have been baptized before, do you still believe in your baptism into Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection of Eternal life? Yes or No?

Please confirm any truth with Jesus of Nazareth, and direct any questions or comments to my blog.
